World Cup: Whither Now My Heart?

Right, now that we've recovered from the Socceroos' shock exit from World Cup 2006, it's time to face the big question: who do we barrack for now?

There's supposed to be some tradition of backing the nation that beats you. Feh. Reeks too much of "to the conquerer go the spoils". I like Italy, but Italy hasn't earned my vote.

Then there're those who think we should back England, but it feels more like we'd be running back to dear Old Mother England, and I'm a republican. Besides, the Swedes have a stronger claim for backing England - coach Erikkson - but Australia hasn't a similar option in any of the other teams still competing.

Personally, I'll just have to go with my club favourite - Arsenal, otherwise known for purposes of the World Cup as France.
