GoogleFight World Cup - Group A Results

This group featured the tournament hosts, Poland and two minnows from the American continents.

As was to be expected the hosts completely dominated the opening game thrashing Costa Rica. Poland began well with a decisive victory over Ecuador, but were stopped conclusively in the next game by the German juggernaut. Ecuador and Costa Rica then produced the first drawn game of the tournament. With Germany destroying Ecuador that left Costa Rica having to defeat Poland to go through, however they were thoroughly outclassed by the Europeans.

Germany and Poland go through to the round of sixteen, while Costa Rica and Ecuador head home to dream of what might have been.

Head's Up

JOOB-headup

We've been trying to get this picture for the last few days. On his front with his head up. Not bad for 8 weeks and 5 days old.

We all spent the morning at the parent group learning baby massage - which is exactly like adult massage except with olive oil (go figga). JOOB was on his tummy - along with all the other bubs - when he does the head raise. The head raise that up until now we've never photographed clearly. The Child Health Care Nurse was amazed. Go JOOB!

GoogleFight World Cup - Group E Results

Considered to be one of the groups of death with two of the European powerhouses up against the CONCACAF champion and Ghana.

The first game went as expected with Italy easily defeating a disappointing Ghana. The next game brought an enormous surprise with the USA thrashing the Czech Republic and thereby bringing up the first of their three wins in this round. It then came down to Italy or the Czechs as to who would go through with them into the second round with the Italians defeating the Czechs soundly in the penultimate game for this group. So the USA and Italians go through and the Czechs and Ghanaians head home for some soul-searching.

GoogleFight World Cup - Group F Results

This group featured the world champion up against the Asian and Oceanian champions as well as Croatia.

Everyone was expecting Brazil to make it through easily with one of the other three joining them in the round of sixteen. However, in a surprise Brazil was eliminated winning only one of its games - against Croatia. It was Japan that proved the group powerhouse beating all three of its opponents albeit only just defeating Australia in the dying moments. Australia too progressed to the second round with big victories over both Brazil and Croatia. Croatia proved to be a major diappointment and it is hard at this point seeing them making it through to the 2010 World Cup.

Of course you realise this means war

On the 31st May, 2006 The Pirate Bay controversally had their servers seized by the police. The Pirate Bay claims to be the world's largest bittorrent tracker. Up until the raid it was based in Sweden, where hosting torrents is considered legal by many experts in Swedish law. Last night the Swedish government's website was attacked by a distributed denial of service attack and is currently unreachable. The Swedish Police's site has also been taken down. Coincidence?

Of course the Pirate Bay - now named the Police Bay - returned within 3 days now operating from the Netherlands. The only losers in this seem to be the Swedish Government and the police, who are always claiming to be too under-resourced to fight 'real' crimes and yet were able to coordinate a team of 50 police to raid TPB. It has been major news in Sweden every day since and there are questions being asked of the Minister for Justice, who directly ordered the raid (apparently illegal in Sweden), about undue foreign interference in the Swedish legal and political system. The other losers are the small businesses that also had their servers seized because they were in the same room as TPB's servers. A massive FUBAR.

Colour Me... Apricot?

Remember when your colouring set included "Flesh" as a colour? Heh, that was a great way to introduce race politics into kindy.

But these are enlightened times. Behold! Crayola has introduced the ethnicity-sensitive Multicultural Crayons and Multicultural Pencils.

The ethnic-sensitive colours, incidentally, are: Black, Sepia, Peach, Apricot, White, Tan, Mahogany, and Burnt Sienna for the crayons and Black, Red, Mahogany, Peach, Brown, Dark Brown, Light Brown, and Tan for the pencils. (The ethnic-sensitive crayons have a different range from the ethnic-sensitive pencils?)

There are also Multicultural Washable Markers and, you guessed it, they have yet again a different range of ethnic-sensitive colours: Tan, Beige, Tawny, Gold, Bronze, Terra Cotta, Mahogany, and Sienna.

Hmm... Skribe might be Tan, JOOB ranges from Peach to Red depending on his temperament, and I think I'm Apricot, possibly Gold.

Whee! Race has never been this much fun! Such subtle shades of ethnicity to consider. Now, which colour are you?

Frisky

I've added our 2004 film, Frisky, to Revver - kinda like YouTube, but the artists get paid. Clicking on the ad at the end of the film gets us about 0.0001cents. So do it a lot =).

Baby Facts

One of the joys of being a new parent (or any parent for that matter), is the forwarding of certain facts to non-parents, especially teenagers hell-bent upon becoming a parent as soon as possible.

Explaining that TP was in labour for twenty-three hours always gets the attention (and wincing) and the fact that 5 hours of sleep a night is considered a good night - especially after the previous 48 without sleep.

Then there's the story of how the midwives take blood from a newborn: they take it from the heel. A pinprick that they then 'milk' (squeeze hard) to get a small drop of blood. This usually takes 5-10 minutes before they have to start on the other heel so they can get enough. Think you've heard a baby wailing? You haven't heard anything until you've heard this. I had to leave the room to stop myself from hurting the midwife.

But the one that really turns stomachs is the test they see if a newborn has wonky hips. If a kid has wonky hips they'll end up being bow legged - think Forrest Gump - but if they catch it early enough they can fix it easily. But the only way they can test for it is by attempting to dislocate the hips. If they succeed then they're wonky. It's painful for bub, but better than life being a box of choc'lates. Fun stuff.

Of course any prospective parent that hears all these horrors (I'm sure we have loads more to learn) and doesn't change their mind then they're truly ready for parenthood. Anyone else is just a clucky wannabe.

Eight Weeks After: Or, He's 2 Months Old Already?!

When JOOB was a month old, his grandparents came to see him. They waited 'til his first month anniversary because traditionally that marks the end of a Chinese mother's confinement. (Also, they weren't sure then if they were required to vote in the Singapore elections, but that's a different story).

Now JOOB is 2 months old, another milestone age, because now we stop counting his age in weeks, but in months. MONTHS. We have a two-month-old son. Hell, that was quick.

I should have been expecting this. After all, we upgraded from Newborn to Infant-sized nappies a short while ago, and we don't have to roll the sleeves up on some of his clothes anymore. And at 5kg he's beginning to get heavy for the baby carrier.

The nights are getting better - or else we're getting used to less sleep - and life is gradually assuming a semblance of normality once more. Little by little, I'm finding time to net again. Little by little, Skribe and I are finding time to talk to one another about things other than JOOB. Yes, little by little, we're getting our old lives back.

Except in one respect:

My little chubby bubby is a funny little bub -
Lying snug as a bug in his little bunny rug
With his tummy to his Mummy -
Watch him chugging down his grub.
Now his belly's full of yummy
He's a hiccuppy puppy
And a squirty burpy bub.

That's right, my baby inspires me to cute poetry. I'm channelling Dr Seuss. Help.

Mobile Phone Spam

Over the last few days I've missed several calls on my mobile from someone with the 02 (Sydney) number prefix. Normally, like most people, I would have called them straight back but I've recently heard about phone spammers calling mobile numbers and immediately hanging up. Their aim is for the recipient to call them back their thereby earning them cash. I grew suspicious when the first call came in at 6.18am (that's 8.18am Sydney time) and didn't leave a message on my voicemail (my phone was silenced). The only people calling me with an 02 prefix (especially at that time of day) would be business people seeking my services and in business you ALWAYS leave a message. Later calls I also somehow missed all with a similar 02 number.

Anyway today I did some checking about the numbers and guess what? They are spammer numbers. There are a whole swathe of them. skit.id.au and 4 wise monkeys have all the details. Here are the numbers (as of today) - they change apparently:

  • 02 8219 0500
  • 02 8303 8320
  • 02 8303 8321
  • 02 8404 2201

Scam

A few days ago I saw a great scam done badly.

A guy walks up to a public phone and pretends to put in some money. He dials, says, 'Hello. Hello!', and then hangs up, complaining about the connection. He checks the coin return, which is of course empty. He checks his pockets, but can't find any more loose change so he asks the people who are standing at the nearby bus stop - and who have seen the entire incident - for change so he can make an urgent phone call.

Had the chap that attempted this delicious scam been dressed in something akin to a suit then chances are he would have found the onlookers overwhelming in their generosity. Unfortunately, he was dressed like a bum and he received nothing.

Despite the subsequent verbal tirade and the assault upon the telephone, which wasn't even scratched as a result, I still think he deserves points for his ingenuity. Points but no coins from me. If you're going to scam you should at least dress the part.

Mellow

JOOB-mellow
We've just returned from visiting the doctor. JOOB had his two month old checkup today as well as his vaccines for Diphtheria, Tetanus, Whooping Cough, Polio, Hepatitis B, Infuenza and Pneumococcal. As you can see he took it all in his stride.

Post Turtle

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75-year-old Texas rancher, whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually, the topic got around to former Texas Governor George W. Bush and his elevation to the White House.

The old Texan said, "Well, ya know, Bush is a 'post turtle'."

Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a 'post turtle' was.

The old rancher said, "When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle."

The old man saw a puzzled look on the doctor's face, so he continued to explain, "You know, he didn't get there by himself, he doesn't belong there, he doesn't know what to do while he's up there, and you just want to help the dumb shit get down!"

And again

For the second night running we've had dinner by candlelight. It's not that we're incurable romantics eager to get JOOB a sibling it's because we've had a total blackout again. Tuesday's blackout started from around noon and ended some thirteen hours later at 1am. While Wednesday's was shorter it still ran from around 5pm until 11pm. In both cases it couldn't have come at a worse time or during a worse season to have an 8 week old and be without a heater.
